A central challenge of managing health outcomes and spending is incentivizing physicians and other providers to practice coordinated, high-value medicine. Bundled payments are a promising arrangement for encouraging health care providers to improve the value of care. However, there are notable gaps in evidence around the effectiveness of bundles implemented by commercial insurers in changing physician behavior.

To fill this gap, HTI is evaluating a large private insurer’s bundled payment program to examine its effects on (1) costs, (2) healthcare resource utilization and (3) quality. Along with providing technical and subject matter expertise on bundle payments and evaluation methodology, HTI will assist in publishing results of the payment model.
